Warning: This post contains major spoilers for every 2019 comic-book movie, including the recently released Joker!
We might only be in October, but the final comic-book movie of the year, Joker, has finally arrived in cinemas! Looking at the handful of comic-book movies released over the past ten months, it’s fair to say that 2019 has been a monumentally great year for the genre.
From massive blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame to small-scale and gritty character studies like Joker, 2019 has delivered more than a few excellent comic-book films, which were each packed with iconic, mind-blowing and downright epic moments. Now that Joker has finally landed on the big screen, we’ve decided to look back at every major comic-book movie released in 2019, and rank the ten scenes/moments that we believe will define this year of comic-book movies. Check out the list below:
Spidey Uses His Peter-Tingle - Spider-Man: Far From Home
There is no shortage of badass and memorable Spidey moments in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but Spidey unlocking his Peter-tingle and using it to defeat Mysterio was undoubtedly the best!
After fighting his way through countless drones to reach Quintin, Peter is forced to rely on his natural abilities more than just his technologically advanced suit. Looking within himself, Peter unlocks his Spidey-sense and uses it to destroy a number of invisible droids, before utilizing it once again to see through Mysterio’s final illusion.
Shazam’s Rooftop Transformation - Shazam!
Delivering family-sized fun, Shazam! offered more than a few thrilling, emotional and surprisingly scary moments, but watching Billy jump from a rooftop and transform into his superhero alter-ego was certainly a highlight!
After his emotional confrontation with his mother, who reveals that she abandoned him as a child on purpose, Billy is forced to suit-up in order to save his new-found family from the villainous Doctor Sivana. In typical superhero fashion, Billy runs to the rooftop and jumps from the building, before shouting “Shazam!” and flying to his family’s rescue.
Captain Marvel Unlocks Her Full Power - Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel was packed full of iconic and badass scenes, especially when it comes to action, but it’s hard to beat Carol finally taking control and unlocking her full power.
This scene takes place shortly after Carol re-discovers who she was on life, as she is overpowered by Yon-Rogg and forced to commune with the supreme intelligence. Finally taking a stand against the people who had held her back and lied to her, Captain Marvel accepts her humanity and finally unlocks her full power, breaking free of her binds and almost destroying the supreme intelligence.
Captain And Peggy Get Their Dance - Avengers: Endgame
As you’ll see later in this list, Avengers: Endgame was full of awesome moments, but only a few scenes were as satisfying as Cap’s final appearance with his long lost love, Peggy Carter.
After defeating Thanos and his massively intimidating army, Captain America is tasked with returning each of the Infinity Stones to the exact time and place they were taken. Along the way, Cap chooses to visit Peggy Carter and decides to stay in the past and live a happy life with her, instead of returning to the present day. In this beautifully satisfying scene, we see Cap and Peggy dancing in their living room, which is a stunning call back to the very first Captain America film.
Mysterio’s Illusion - Spider-Man: Far From Home
For every comic-book fan that believed Mysterio could never be adapted effectively for live-action, this sequence was an absolute joy to watch.
Taking place moments after Peter and MJ discover the truth about Quentin Beck aka. Mysterio, this incredibly complex and flawlessly executed scene shows just how mind-bendingly brutal Mysterio’s illusions can be. The iconic, bowl-headed villain takes Spidey for a trippy and visually breathtaking ride, which includes sights such as a zombie Iron Man, before canceling the illusion and leading Peter to be hit by a train.
Joker’s Bathroom Dance - Joker
There are plenty of memorable, exciting and downright horrifying moments in Joker, but one of our favorites is undoubtedly the character’s hauntingly beautiful bathroom dance.
This sequence takes place almost immediately after Arthur murders three young men on a train, with the character finding refuge in a restroom. Rather than hiding his gun or throwing up like a normal person would, however, The Joker chooses to dance alone in the filthy room, as though the horrific event unlocked something deep within him.
Cap Wields Mjölnir - Avengers: Endgame
After years of in-depth discussions, arguments and endless speculation, Captain America finally lifted Thor’s iconic weapon, satisfying comic-book fans around the world.
In the epic final act of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor face off against the villainous Thanos, but things don’t go exactly to plan. When it looks like the mad titan is moments away from killing Thor, Captain America comes to the rescue by heroically lifting Mjölnir and using the legendary hammer to kick Thanos’ ass.
Joker On The Staircase - Joker
It’s almost unbearable to watch Arthur Fleck slowly transform into the clown prince of crime, but it’s impossible to deny that The Joker’s glorious debut, dancing down the stairs Arthur once climbed, is an absolutely brilliant comic-book movie moment.
This perfectly executed sequence takes place moments after Arthur brutally murders an ex-colleague, finalizing his transformation into the iconic Batman villain. In his full Joker makeup and costume, Arthur gloriously dances down the unbearable stairs he was once forced to climb, while Gary Glitter’s controversial Rock and Roll Part 2 plays in the background.
I Am Iron Man - Avengers: Endgame
There are a few comic-book movie moments in 2019 that will bring a tear to your eye, but none compare to seeing Tony Stark aka. Iron Man sacrifice himself to stop Thanos and save the universe. In this heartbreakingly awesome scene, Thanos once again has control of the Infinity Stones and intends to use them to snap away the Marvel universe.
In a final attempt to defeat the purple titan, Iron Man uses his advanced suit to steal the stones, snapping his fingers and bringing an end to Thanos once and for all. With Thanos and his army defeated, Tony is able to share a few final moments with Pepper Potts, War Machine and Spider-Man, before passing away.
Portals - Avengers: Endgame
When you look back at every comic-book movie released this year, there isn’t a single moment or sequence that is as thrilling, emotionally satisfying and mind-blowingly epic as the already iconic portal scene from Avengers: Endgame.
In what is arguably the most epic moment of an already outstanding movie, Captain America is the only Avenger left standing against Thanos and his army. Preparing to take on the alien invaders by himself, Cap is shocked to hear the voice of his old pal Sam Wilson aka. Falcon. Hope is quickly restored to Captain America and the Universe, as every conceivable Marvel hero, including those who were snapped away in Avengers: Infinity War, appears through portals created by Doctor Strange.
