Supergirl is in its fifth season, and while it has always been a part of the Arrowverse, its involvement in that world is now bigger than ever. After the events of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the Arrowverse has definite “Pre-Crisis” and “Post-Crisis” eras. Supergirl now finds its characters, city, and organizations on the same Earth as the rest of the Arrowverse.
These shows have always provided plenty of storylines and mysteries every season, but now in addition to the ones we normally have, the Post-Crisis world offers even more. So, here are the ten questions we need answered before the Supergirl finale.
Will Lena See Herself As A Villain?
Lena Luthor has been one of the most complex characters on Supergirl. She’s maintained that she’s not like her family, while also fearing that everyone thinks she is. Lena has crossed lines with her secret experiments before, but she’s been far nobler than her brother and mother for most of the show, and she’s also helped Supergirl on numerous occasions. Season five, however, finds Lena in a very different place.
Feeling betrayed one too many times, Lena redefines what the lines are to her. She has her A.I. take over Eve Teschmacher, pretends to help Malefic only to keep him prisoner and experiment on him, and tries to use Q-waves to mind control all of Earth. Lena still sees her actions as necessary and even heroic. Will she stay in that mindset, or will she realize she’s becoming what she hates?
Why Are Just Those Specific Symbols In The Tower?
After J’onn establishes the Tower as a National City outpost for the yet-unnamed Justice League (or Superfriends), he shows the others that they can call him for assistance using a special button. There are multiple buttons on the wall, with the means of contacting Supergirl, Batwoman, Flash, J’onn, Dreamer, and Brainy. All the National City heroes are included here, but only four of the seven JL members. What about the others?
Of course, Superman and Sara aren’t as readily available. Black Lightning has his own city with its own problems, but then so do Batwoman and Flash. It may be a small detail, but perhaps J’onn can give us a reason for having only these specific heroes on speed dial.
How Far Will The Possibilities Of Obsidian Go?
The Obsidian virtual reality tech is very important in this season of Supergirl, and we’ve already seen it do an array of amazing things. Kelly Olsen used it to look at Malefic’s thoughts, and it’s been used to place the user in multiple virtual scenarios. But it’s now been mentioned that you could grow and bottle your own wine in Obsidian and sell it, and you can make yourself real money using it. It’s become quite the resource.
Obsidian is on Lex Luthor’s radar, while also having ties to Gemma Cooper and Leviathan. Will Obsidian be used to harm Supergirl and her team? Will it somehow be turned against the Luthors or even Leviathan? It certainly has the power to be used for great good or great evil.
Who Will Win In A Battle Of Lex Vs. Leviathan?
Lex Luthor is doing whatever he can to learn about Leviathan. Leviathan is planning on using Lex after he “convinced” Gemma to allow Luthorcorp to assist with Obsidian. Leviathan may be an ancient and powerful organization, but Lex has the same drive as they do. He’ll stop at nothing to achieve more power, and he’s proven many times to be very dangerous.
It would seem either Lex or Leviathan will meet their match in the other, but will either of them accept it? Neither of them is one to yield, show weakness, or allow failure to last. The question of who can outmatch the other is one of the most exciting prospects for the rest of this season.
Will The Justice League Fight Leviathan?
Now that all the heroes and villains are on the same Earth, could one show’s big bad become dangerous enough to require the help of the others? The crossovers mostly bring the heroes together because of a sudden threat that requires everyone’s immediate attention. But what if a threat grows out of one show and envelops the rest?
There are other evil organizations like Black Hole in The Flash or the A.S.A. in Black Lightning, but Leviathan is no ordinary group. The comics have had many of these situations, with storylines building in one comic and then affecting the entire DC Universe. Leviathan may just be the threat to do it in the Arrowverse.
Will Brainy Remain Uninhibited?
The removal of Brainy’s inhibitors has altered the course of the show and the characters. Due to advice from another Brainiac 5 about focusing on defeating Leviathan, Brainy broke up with Nia and began helping Lex. He’s crossed lines and affected his friends, which they have forgiven, but are there limits to how far Brainy will go?
Alex has stepped down as the Director of the DEO, and Brainy’s work with Lex has earned him the position of the new Director, which will surely lead Brainy to more opportunities and more choices. However, the question of whether he remains uninhibited will likely come down not to how he performs his job, but how it affects his relationships with his friends.
Will Brainy Outwit Lex?
Brainy has become integral to Lex’s fight against Leviathan. When it comes down to it, Brainy and Lex are the two smartest characters on the show. Brainy certainly wants to take down Leviathan, but he won’t want to stay on Lex’s side forever.
Brainy has been an important asset to the DEO, and it stands to reason he’ll be the same to Lex. But in the way that Brainy has helped our heroes achieve their goals, there is the question of whether he will be just as efficient for Lex. It would be the most beneficial if Brainy can find a way to continue helping Lex without setting him up as an even worse threat.
Will Andrea Get Her Powers Again?
Pre-Crisis, Andrea Rojas got the powers of Acrata from a medallion she and Lena had searched for in the past. She was also activated by Leviathan, who had threatened her father. Post-Crisis, she still has her ties to Leviathan but hasn’t been activated by them. If she is used by Leviathan, will she once again become Acrata?
Andrea doesn’t seem to have her powers now and currently doesn’t need them she did before. But her story and her powers were very interesting, and it’s likely a matter of time before they come back into season five.
Will We See More Doppelgängers?
This is a question the other Arrowverse shows will help answer too, but Supergirl has already had many examples. Although Crisis combined the Earths into one, we’ve had doppelgängers who came through a wormhole.
There are now two Als running the bar, there were multiple Brainiac 5s to deal with, and Winn had to come back in time to stop an evil version of himself. And that’s just been the first three episodes since Crisis. We might not be seeing any more versions of people breaching over from other Earths, but there may be doppelgängers already spread through Earth-Prime that we haven’t met yet.
What Is Winn’s Place In The Show Now?
When Winn came to stop his doppelgänger, he did so with even more knowledge and skills than he had before. Winn’s place on the team was filled by Brainy, and his life in the future is even more solidified with having a wife and child there. However, his knowledge of the future has set him up as an ally against specific threats.
We’ve seen this play out many times on The Flash, with Jay Garrick showing up unannounced to inform the team of dangers they don’t know about. While Winn isn’t one of the main characters anymore, he could continue to appear in the same way and would be a welcome addition to any episode.
