The start of a new year means new TV, and 2020 is jam packed full of premieres. With so many networks and streaming services, our schedules are bursting at the seams with TV to watch. That being said, we always have room for a new obsession or an old favorite.

From comedy to drama, to reality to sci-fi, there is something for every single fandom. With long-running series like Arrow and Supernatural ending, we’ll need franchises like Marvel, Star Trek, and Star Wars to fill the void. To make sure we don’t miss a thing, these are the 10 TV shows premiering and returning in 2020 that we can’t wait for.

STARGIRL

One of DC Universe’s biggest strengths has been the development of its female heroes. The streaming network’s newest series continues that trend with Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, a high school sophomore who becomes Stargirl when she finds a powerful staff.

The character’s creator Geoff Johns also created the show, and is writing and executive producing, along with the Arrowverse’s Greg Berlanti. Joel McHale, Henry Thomas, and Luke Wilson are also in the cast as members of the Justice Society of America. With such a strong behind the scenes crew and cast, we’re very impatient for the series to premiere mid year.

AGENTS OF SHIELD

Though it’s never been fully integrated into the movie storylines, Agents of SHIELD is a cornerstone of the MCU. Of course, like every TV series, its time has come. The seventh and final season is set to premiere in the summer.

When we left off with the team, they were planning to stop the Chronicoms from taking over Earth by travelling back to the past to keep them from destroying history. Also, Coulson is an LMD now. At this point, we feel like part of the team and we’re extremely invested in how it all ends.

POSE

Through its first two seasons Pose has been a game changing celebration of underground ball culture in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Through the Houses of Evangelista, Ferocity and Wintour battle on the ballroom floor, they’re also a family who stand by each other through the challenges to their community.

Season two ended with Blanca adopting new members of her house, as she struggles to let her first group of children leave the nest. While the ballroom scenes are always can’t miss, it’s the family drama and tight friendships that make us miss this show when it’s not on.

THE BOONDOCKS

Never has the world needed The Boondocks more than right now. HBO Max announced that it is bringing back the animated classic featuring brothers Riley and Huey Freeman with their grandfather Robert.

Based on the comic strip, the show originally ran on Cartoon Network for three seasons between 2005 and 2014. Its brilliant social commentary is remembered as one of TV’s smartest series. Creator Aaron McGruder is set to return, though there’s been no word on whether Regina King will be back to voice Huey and Riley, or who will voice Grandpa, as the recent passing of John Witherspoon has left very big shoes to fill.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

It’s very rare for cancellation to help a show, but in the case of Brooklyn Nine-Nine that’s exactly what happened. Since being canceled by FOX, the comedy’s legend has only grown, leading to larger ratings on NBC and a bigger fanbase. Ahead of its season seven premiere on February 6, Nine-Nine was renewed for a season eight.

We can expect more nonsense and shenanigans from our favorite cops, and of course, an elaborate, hilariously competitive heist. We also need to see how Capt. Holt gets out of working traffic duty. It’s one of those shows that never fails to make us laugh.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS

For years, Star Wars fans have been campaigning for another season of The Clone Wars. Thanks to Disney+ their wish is finally being granted. The animated series never had a proper ending, so constant re-airings over the years has only increased its popularity.

According to Den of Geek, The Clone Wars will feature Ahsoka living on Coruscant and the siege of Mandalore. There are also rumors that it will be the final season, but we all know if it’s a hit, they’ll find more stories to tell. The show is set to hit Disney+ in February.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

The Arrowverse’s funniest and most insane heroes are set to return in December as part of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. The show will return for regular episodes January 14, and see the team dealing with all the evil figures Astra released from Hell.

Amongst all the usual nonsense and shenanigans, there will be sadness when original cast member Brandon Routh exits along with his wife and on-screen love interest Courtney Ford. What makes Legends work is its unpredictable nature. We never know what to expect and we love it.

DOCTOR WHO

In 2018, Jodie Whittaker debuted as Doctor Who’s Thirteenth Doctor, and ushered in a return to the show’s adventure of the week format. Joined by new companions Yas, Ryan, and Graham, The Doctor felt lighter and more fun in her new regeneration. Following a great season, we were forced to wait through a year long hiatus. However, the TARDIS will finally return in early 2020.

The teaser showed The Doctor getting her James Bond on and interacting with familiar frenemies the Judoon. There’s also a big mystery waiting in 1943 Paris. The season after a regeneration is always fun, since there’s less exposition and more running.

STAR TREK: PICARD

As if Patrick Stewart returning as Jean-Luc Picard isn’t enough, Star Trek: Picard also includes franchise veterans Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Del Arco, and Jonathan Frakes. They’re joined by Trek newcomers Isa Briones, Alison Pill, Santiago Cabrera, and Michelle Hurd.

The story follows Picard as he helps a mysterious girl, while dealing with his past with the Borg. It appears that Stewart hasn’t missed a beat in his return to Star Trek. The series simultaneously feels familiar and new. The 10 episode first season is scheduled to premiere on CBS All Access January 23.

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER

As sad as we all were to see Chris Evans leave the MCU, we’re glad Steve got a happy ending, and that he passed the shield on to Sam Wilson. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will probably feature Sam and Bucky in some sort of adventure, but obviously Marvel isn’t giving anything away.

We do know that the series also stars Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Wyatt Russell as John Walker and Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo. Honestly, the plot doesn’t matter because, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are great together, and we’re obsessed with the MCU, so we’re all in Disney+.
