Television crossovers have been happening for years, and have become more prevalent in recent years (thanks, in large part, to Dick Wolf’s canonical universe). Now, it’s almost a given that television shows existing within the same universe will cross over at some point. Superhero series, in particular, have been doing this with frequency lately, exemplified in the fact that Arrow and The Flash writers have created once-a-year crossover events, and The Flash just made a special appearance for an episode on CBS’s Supergirl.
We’ve decided to come up with twelve different crossover events that we’re hoping to see happen in the future. And since superhero crossovers are talked about so frequently, we’ve tried to stick mostly to non-superhero shows in this list.
12. Supergirl / Arrow
We’re making an exception for a few superhero shows, and in an ideal world, Supergirland Arrow would be crossing over soon. With the recent crossover with The CW’s lighter superhero series starring the fastest man alive, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) brought a lot of charm and charisma to CBS’s Supergirl. In particular, Gustin’s scenes with Melissa Benoist – Supergirl herself – seemed easy and natural. The two seemed to have quite a bit of on-screen chemistry.
If Arrow and Supergirl were to cross over, it would make the most tonal sense for Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) to enter Kara Danvers’ world. Not only would Felicity be useful as a hacker, but she would also not disrupt the more lighthearted nature of the series. In spite of the fact that seeing the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) or Spartan (David Ramsey) or even Speedy (Willa Holland) in National City would be welcome, their superhero alter egos flirt more with darkness, brooding, and angst than Felicity does. Plus, how adorable would a budding friendship between Kara and Felicity be?
11. Gotham / Legends of Tomorrow
With the premise of Legends of Tomorrow allowing for endless destinations and time periods, it seems only inevitable that one of those destinations could be Gotham City. Apart from the obvious fact that both series are rooted in DC Comics, they are also similar in tone and quality.
Gotham’s recent rise of the villains of the series would provide a nice detour for the time-traveling legends, perhaps allowing Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) and Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) the chance to fight against their former criminal selves and embrace their new hero status. Not only that, but the characters will also get the chance to interact with a young Bruce Wayne/Batman (David Mazouz) and possibly help shape him into the hero he will become.
10. Orphan Black / The Magicians
Orphan Black and The Magicians may seem like total opposites, until you realize how similar their characters are and how well they might interact with one another. Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) is a street smart, tough, and ultimately protective clone – one who loves deeply and desperately. Even though his exterior is a bit pricklier, Penny (Arjun Gupta) cares deeply for his friends. His natural sarcasm and dry humor would be a perfect fit with Sarah’s.
Helena (Tatiana Maslany) would be a fascinating subject for Julia (Stella Maeve) to study and interact with. Cosima (Maslany again, sensing a pattern here?) and Quentin (Jason Ralph) would likely spend the vast majority of the crossover debating the dichotomy between science and magic, while Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) and Alison (Maslany) would meander around, keeping the clones and magicians in line. And, of course, Felix (Jordan Gavaris) and Eliot (Hale Applebaum) would spend a vast majority of the episode being fabulous with Margo (Summer Bishil), sipping cocktails and painting. In spite of the fact that there’s no magic in Orphan Black and The Magicians doesn’t focus on science or cloning, the shows seem like a natural fit for a crossover event.
9. Younger / Jane the Virgin
Younger, a TV Land sitcom, and Jane the Virgin – The CW’s critical darling – would be a natural fit for a team-up as well. In spite of the fact that they take place in different cities on the east coast, both series focus on incredibly strong women and a similar brand of humor.
While Liza Miller (Sutton Foster) attempts to navigate life in New York City as a recently-divorced woman in the world of publishing, Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) tries to navigate the balance between love, career, and family in Miami. Both women are extremely intelligent and passionate about writing. If Liza was to serve as a mentor to Jane, she could truly learn a lot not only from a writing standpoint, but also a career and love-balancing one as well. Characters like Rogelio de la Vega (Jaime Camil) in Jane the Virgin would fit well in Younger’s world, and vice versa. With The Narrator (Anthony Mendez) providing the voiceover narration for the crossover event, it would sure to be a hit.
8. The Blacklist / Quantico
ABC’s Quantico is a non-stop, action/adventure drama, laced with intrigue and mystery at every turn. The Blacklist, meanwhile, is NBC’s hit series which focuses on criminal activity and features Raymond Reddington (James Spader) at the center of it — and on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Both series constantly ask questions, posing mysteries that the audience tries to remain one step ahead of.
In terms of tone, these two shows are fairly similar, and to integrate Red into Quantico as a criminal that Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra) is desperately seeking out for assistance would be welcome, especially because Red would be working against the FBI. In Quantico’s narrative, Alex is trying to determine the identity of a terrorist, and Red’s criminal connections would serve as an easy set-up for a crossover event. In spite of the fact that a crossover between the shows is highly unlikely (given the plot holes that would have to be overlooked to make plot feasible, and the fact that the shows air on separate networks), it definitely could be a breath of fresh air for both series.
7. Suits / Scandal
In the fast-paced world of law firms, Suits’ Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) is at the top. Pearson Specter Litt is renowned in the show’s universe for being the very best, and as a named partner, Harvey is also known for his pretty faultless track record in the courtroom. Unfortunately, the recent season finale of Suits saw the crumbling of the empire that Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) and her colleagues worked hard to build and maintain.
Enter: Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), a natural fit to handle the crisis that the firm is facing. They’re in desperate need of a way to recover, and Olivia’s colleagues could help save the firm. Though a crossover between Scandal and Suits might not ever happen, there would be no better time to integrate Olivia’s tough, strategic mind into the world of Pearson Specter Litt than next season.
6. Once Upon A Time / Grimm
For two series deeply rooted in fairytales and monsters, Once Upon A Timeand Grimm have yet to cross over with one another. Yes, both series focus on different sides of mysticism, fairytales, and storytelling – the former revolves around hope and heroes saving the day; the latter is darker and more reflective of the Brothers Grimm folklore than anything else.
In spite of the fact that the shows are different in tone, a crossover event between them could be interesting. Regina Mills (Lana Parilla) would assimilate well to the world of Wesen, and would likely bond with Adalind (Claire Coffee) the quickest. Meanwhile, heroes Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) and Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) would likely team up in order to take down a “Big Bad” that threatens both characters’ realms. Combining the world of fairytale magic and Wesen folklore could be interesting, and a fun departure from the “norm” for Once Upon A Time and Grimm.
5. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend / Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
With the debut of the second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the conclusion of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s first season, it has become even more evident that the two series would benefit from a crossover event. Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) and Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) have similar personalities – they invent musical montages in their minds, and envision their happiest selves as fairytale heroines. Kimmy and Rebecca both long for happiness, and both seek it out in relationships with others. Kimmy dons bright colors and has adventures in her new city. She’s a sweet, sensitive person but is also harboring a lot of issues that she refuses to deal with (most having to do with her mother). Similarly, Rebecca spends a vast majority of the first season ignoring the issues that she has, keeping them bottled up and releasing them in unhealthy ways. (She, too, has issues with her mother.)
Both series are so zany, off-the-wall, and vibrant in their comedy that they would complement one another perfectly. This season’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt featured an impromptu quasi-musical episode, and it fit perfectly. If Rebecca Bunch was to take a trip to New York City (or Kimmy Schmidt to West Covina), there is no doubt that the crossover event would be a musical, magical, hilarious hit.
4. Lucifer / Blindspot
Both procedurals with twists, Blindspotand Luciferwould work well together because of their characters. In spite of the fact that Blindspot doesn’t dabble in the supernatural realm, its characters – like Jane/Taylor (Jaimie Alexander) and Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) – could easily fit into the procedural element of Lucifer, interacting with the show’s titular character (Tom Ellis) as well as Chloe (Lauren German).
Seeing the sassy, dry-humored Lucifer alongside a very stoic, no-nonsense character like Weller would be a treat, and his suave interactions with Taylor/Jane (and likely fascination with her tattoos) would serve a crossover event well. It is not difficult for Blindspot to set up an eventual crossover with another show – any one of Jane’s numerous tattoos could lead directly to a show or character in it – and Lucifer would be a perfect set-up for such an event.
3. Doctor Who / Sherlock
Both penned by Steven Moffat and featuring incredible British talent, a Doctor Who and Sherlock crossover would be ideal. Both shows have rabid fandoms, and both fandoms tend to overlap with one another on a fairly large scale. Integrating the TARDIS into anywhere that Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) happen to be would be an essentially easy feat.
With the Twelfth Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) dry humor and superior wit, Sherlock would have a challenging adversary. Watching the two men attempt to solve a problem and clashing in their method of doing so would be hilarious. (Plus, just imagine Sherlock’s reaction to the TARDIS or sonic sunglasses.) Though Sherlock and Doctor Who are a bit different in terms of content (murder mystery versus science fiction), both shows feature compelling, strong leads and would benefit from a crossover event simply because some of the writing team overlaps for both shows.
2. Limitless / Scorpion
Scorpion continues to be a procedural hit for CBS, whileLimitless is the new kid on the block, just wrapping up its first season. With both shows on CBS and both boasting similar tones in terms of writing (both series might be procedurals, but they’re heavily character-driven and also contain a lot of the same brand of humor), it’s just a matter of time before a crossover event occurs.
As the logical, rational handler of the CJC and of Brian Finch (Jake McDorman), Naz (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) would charge into Scorpion’s world and likely gravitate toward a character like Cabe Gallo (Robert Patrick). As the goofball with a heart of gold, Brian and Toby Curtis (Eddie Kaye Thomas) would immediately hit it off, bonding over science, their shared sense of humor, and psychology and strategizing on cases. It’s very likely that they would land themselves into trouble, and it would serve as a great comedic basis for the plot of the crossover.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Harris (Jennifer Carpenter) and Paige Dineen (Katharine McPhee) would likely become friendly, with Rebecca offering helpful advice to the woman about her role on the team and relationship with Walter (Elyes Gabel). Both Limitless and Scorpion have casts with immense chemistry, so integrating either show into the other would only be beneficial.
1. Brooklyn 99 / New Girl
Surprisingly, in spite of the fact that both shows air on FOX and have a close relationship (Mike Schur, the creator of Brooklyn 99 is married to New Girl EP J.J. Philbin), New Girl and Brooklyn 99 have yet to cross over with one another. New Girl exists on the west coast, and could easily take a trip to New York City, especially now that Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris) is a police officer. His new role would serve as the perfect bridge to the world of the Nine-Nine, and it’s extremely likely that the first friend he would make there would be Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio).
The rest of the gang would bond with their Nine-Nine counterpart – Jess (Zooey Deschanel) would probably gravitate toward Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), while Schmidt (Max Greenfield) would get himself wrapped up in a crazy scheme with Gina (Chelsea Peretti). Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) would try to become best friends with Jake (Andy Samberg), which would likely go horribly awry. And sitting back, providing meta commentary on the entire crossover event? Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) and Cece (Hannah Simone). With the same kind of writing style and humor, it’s almost odd that these two FOX comedies haven’t yet crossed over with one another. But it would be a comedy goldmine if they did.
What shows currently on the air do you think should cross over with each other? Let us know in the comments.
